Nathan Cole joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic as First Associate Concertmaster this summer after nine seasons in the Chicago Symphony. In addition to serving as principal second violin of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, he has appeared as guest concertmaster with the orchestras of Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Houston, Ottawa, Seattle and Oregon. A native of Lexington, Kentucky, he made his debut with the Louisville Orchestra at the age of ten. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the Curtis Institute of Music. In addition to his studies there with Pamela Frank, Felix Galimir, Ida Kavafian and Jaime Laredo, Nathan formed the Grancino String Quartet, debuting in New York's Weill Hall. A participant of the Marlboro festival and tours, he now serves as Music Director of the Chamber Music Festival of Lexington. Nathan was previously on the faculty of the Roosevelt University, as well as a coach for the Chicago Civic Orchestra. His articles and photographs have appeared in Strings, Symphony and Chamber Music magazines, as well as on his website, natesviolin.com. His wife, Akiko Tarumoto, is also a violinist in the Chicago Symphony.
Nathan's debut recording, Rapid Approach, is an unaccompanied disc featuring works by Bach, Bartok and Augusta Read Thomas.
